Rowing Tabata

I headed the gym at lunch time today for an appointment with the Concept2 rowing machine. I warmed up 15 minutes on a recumbent bicycle, another five minutes on the rower, and then did a round of Tabata. I wrote down my distance and stroke rate on each work portion, but I can’t find the piece of paper (it’s probably sitting on my desk at work). Wish I had realized that before I worked on the html code for 15 minutes to put in the table!
But I can say that my average was around 92km at 42 strokes per minute for each of the eight work intervals. I also checked my heart rate at the finish of the last two intervals and it was 155bpm each time. The old standard 220-age forumula puts my max heart rate at 163. Now I’m sure that isn’t accurate in my case but I was definitely in the anaerobic threshhold range. I was hampered by having to place my foot so that I didn’t put pressure where I’m experiencing the pain, so that hampered my performance somewhat. It was still, however, a good workout.
EDIT: Sure enough–the paper with my rowing results was on my desk. Here’s the distance in km and strokes per minute for each interval:
- 95 42
- 97 42
- 93 45
- 92 42
- 88 42
- 90 42
- 91 42
- 91 42

Time For An Adjustment

I’m getting a tad frustrated with my lack of weight loss. I’ve been doing a good job of avoiding junk so I don’t think that’s to blame. In thinking about it, I think I know what the problem is. During the period where I lost 30 pounds, my main meal was the “big ass” salad which contained a moderate helping of protein. I may have had a small chicken breast cut up in it, or a can of tuna, or some ham. But lately I’ve gotten away from the salad and have been eating meat—a lot of it. I think I’m probably eating now at a level where I can sustain my current weight, but if I want to shed some body fat, I’m going to have to exercise a little more portion control. So it’s time to shrug off my lazy streak and start making some salads, and quit eating 12 ounce steaks for dinner.
